A card failure can produce three different outcomes: no authorization and no ticket, a temporary bank authorization but no ticket, or a completed ticket that the browser failed to display. Treating all three as the same problem is how travelers accidentally buy twice.
Before trying another card, determine whether KORAIL created a reservation.
Step 1: look for the ticket, not the bank notification
Open KORAIL's official English Check/Refund Ticket page. Use the same passenger spelling, email or password, nationality and payment information requested by the page. Search your email, including spam, for the confirmation.
If a valid ticket appears, stop. Save it offline and verify the train, date, stations, car and seat. A browser error after payment does not justify another purchase when the ticket already exists.
Step 2: classify the card entry
A pending or reserved amount is not always a completed charge. Banks can hold an authorization while the merchant transaction later fails or reverses. A posted charge is more serious, but even then the ticket lookup is the primary check.
Take screenshots of the KORAIL error, time, amount and bank status. Do not publish or send the full card number. Contact the card issuer and KORAIL if a posted charge exists without a retrievable ticket.
Step 3: confirm that the bank allows the transaction
Check overseas purchases, online purchases and card-security controls in the bank app. Some banks block the first Korean transport transaction as unusual. Ask whether the bank saw and declined the authorization; this gives a clearer answer than trying several more times.
Make sure the card has sufficient available balance after currency conversion and any temporary holds. A debit card can be more sensitive to duplicate authorizations than a credit card.
Step 4: let authentication finish
The card issuer may open a 3-D Secure approval window, bank app or one-time-code page. Pop-up blocking, automatic translation, privacy extensions and an expired bank session can interrupt the return to KORAIL.
For one controlled retry, use a current browser, allow the required payment window and avoid switching networks during authorization. If the bank app approves the purchase, return to the browser and wait for the KORAIL result.
Step 5: check the booking data
Use the traveler name in the format expected by the reservation page. Avoid emojis, extra punctuation and auto-filled local characters. Recheck the card expiry, security code and billing data if requested.
Also confirm that you are on the official English KORAIL site. A Korean member flow can request domestic identity details that a tourist does not have.
Retry rule: one change at a time
If no ticket and no completed charge exist, make one retry after fixing the likely cause. Do not change browser, card, passenger name and departure time all at once; you will not know which issue was responsible.
If the retry fails, use a different major card or contact the bank. Stop rapid repeated attempts because fraud systems can temporarily block otherwise valid cards.
Do not solve a payment error through an unknown link
KORAIL support will not need you to send a card security code through email or social media. Return to the official domain yourself instead of following a message that claims the first payment failed. A fake support page can imitate a familiar error and collect both card and passport details.
When a duplicate charge appears
Match each charge with the reservation numbers you can retrieve. If two valid tickets exist for the same passenger and train, use the official refund flow and read the deduction shown before confirming. If only one ticket exists but two posted charges remain, gather both transaction references and contact the merchant and issuer.
Do not begin a bank chargeback while an ordinary merchant reversal is still being investigated unless the issuer advises it. A pending authorization often disappears differently from a posted charge, and the correct timeline comes from the bank that issued the card.
Safe alternatives
You can buy at a station ticket counter or machine, subject to seat availability. This is reasonable for flexible travel on an ordinary day but risky for a fixed train or high-demand date.
Korea Tourism Organization reported expanded KORAIL distribution through global platforms in 2026. If you use one, verify the train details, final price, refund rule and whether the delivered document is a boarding ticket or a voucher requiring another step.
If the train sells out while you troubleshoot
Check nearby departure times and the correct station before changing the entire itinerary. Seoul Station and Yongsan serve different route patterns, and SRT uses a separate system from KORAIL. Do not buy a ticket from an unknown person offering a screenshot or transferred seat.
If a holiday reservation period applies, ordinary release and sales procedures may differ. Follow the notice on the official operator site.
Information to give support
- Date and approximate time of the attempt in Korea time.
- Departure date, station pair and train if selected.
- Error text or screenshot with sensitive details hidden.
- Whether the amount is pending or posted.
- Whether Check/Refund Ticket finds a reservation.
This evidence lets KORAIL and the bank distinguish a booking problem from a card problem. Never email a full card number, card security code or passport scan unless you are inside a verified secure process that explicitly requires it.
Before you close the problem
You are finished only when one valid ticket matches the passenger, stations, date and train, and any duplicate charge has a documented resolution. Keep the ticket offline and retain screenshots of a failed transaction until the bank hold disappears or the dispute is settled.
